Your independent BMW garage

BMW servicing at local garage prices

Langs Automotive looks after BMWs from across Dorset and Hampshire from our workshop at Three Legged Cross, near Wimborne. Our qualified technician Chris works on the whole BMW range, from the 1 Series and the X models to the sports models, including M Sport and the high-performance M cars.

We service your BMW with dealer-grade diagnostic equipment, which means we can put the service onto your BMW's service record and keep your history complete. You get the standard you'd expect from a main dealer without the main-dealer labour rates.

Alongside routine servicing, BMW owners come to us for an automatic gearbox oil change on ZF Steptronic gearboxes, walnut blasting to clear carbon from direct-injection engines, vehicle diagnostics with full BMW fault-code access, ECU remapping and laser wheel alignment. An MOT can be booked alongside your service.

Diagnostics & programming

Main-dealer diagnostics, local garage prices

A modern BMW runs on dozens of control modules, from the engine and gearbox to the lights, parking sensors, driver assistance and iDrive. A generic code reader only sees a fraction of them. Our dealer-level equipment reads BMW-specific fault codes across every module, so we can:

  • Read and clear BMW fault codes in every module
  • Code and programme replacement parts
  • Register a new battery to the car
  • Reset service reminders and update the service record

Warning light on, or a fault that keeps coming back? Book our vehicle diagnostics and we'll find the cause before anything gets replaced.

What we see on the ramp

Common BMW faults we fix

01

Timing chain wear

The N47 diesel (in many 118d, 320d and 520d models) and the N20 2.0 turbo petrol are known for timing chain and guide wear. A rattle or whine, especially from cold, is the warning sign. Caught early it's a planned repair, not a new engine.

02

Oil leaks

Rocker cover gaskets and oil filter housing gaskets harden with age and weep oil. A burning smell after a drive or oil on the engine undertray are the clues, and an oil filter housing leak can soak the auxiliary belt if it's left.

03

Cooling system faults

Many BMW petrol engines use an electric water pump and an electronically controlled thermostat, and both can fail with little warning. A coolant warning or the car dropping into reduced power needs looking at straight away.

04

Carbon build-up on direct-injection petrols

Direct-injection petrol engines build up carbon on the back of the intake valves, causing rough idle, misfires and hesitation. Walnut blasting clears it without taking the engine apart.

05

DPF, EGR & AdBlue on diesels

Diesels used mostly for short journeys can clog the DPF, stick the EGR valve or throw AdBlue faults, often with limp mode. We diagnose properly first, then clean, regenerate or replace as needed. See vehicle diagnostics.

06

Battery registration & electrical faults

A new battery on most modern BMWs has to be registered to the car, or the charging system treats it like the old one. We also deal with window regulators, central locking, sensors and the warning lights other garages can't explain.

M & M Sport

Looked after like the performance car it is

M cars and M Sport models are bought to be driven, and they need more than a basic oil change. We service them to schedule with the oil grade the engine calls for, keep the automatic gearbox healthy with a gearbox oil service, clear carbon from direct-injection engines with walnut blasting, set the geometry with laser wheel alignment and, if you want more, offer performance remapping.

BMW servicing FAQs

Will an independent service affect my BMW warranty?

No. UK competition law lets you have your car serviced by an independent garage without affecting the manufacturer warranty, as long as the work follows the manufacturer's schedule and uses parts of matching quality. We service your BMW to schedule and record every service properly.

Can you update my BMW's service record?

Yes. Our dealer-grade diagnostic equipment lets us add your service to the BMW service record, so your service history stays complete for your warranty and when you come to sell.

How often does my BMW need servicing?

Most modern BMWs use Condition Based Servicing, where the car monitors the oil, brakes and brake fluid and tells you on the dash when each is due. Give us your registration and we'll check what yours needs and when.

How much is a BMW service?

A minor service starts from £199 and a major service from £299. Prices vary with the engine, the oil grade and the spark plugs your BMW needs. Call us with your registration for an exact price.

Do you change the oil in BMW automatic gearboxes?

Yes. We carry out an automatic gearbox oil change on ZF Steptronic gearboxes from £299, and we recommend it about every 50,000 miles. Old fluid is a common cause of rough or slow shifts. See our automatic gearbox oil service.

Do you service M cars and M Sport models?

Yes. We look after the whole range, from the 1 Series and the X models to the high-performance M cars and M Sport trims, using the right oil and parts for each engine.

Can you remap my BMW?

Yes, we offer ECU remapping. Call us with your registration and we'll talk through what your engine can safely gain and whether it suits the way you drive.

Where are you and which areas do you cover?

Our workshop is on Woolsbridge Industrial Estate, Three Legged Cross, Wimborne BH21 6SU. BMW owners come to us from Wimborne, Ferndown, Verwood, Ringwood, Bournemouth, Salisbury and across the New Forest.

As a nervous user of garages (due to past poor experiences), I was pleasantly surprised about the high level of service Rob Lang provided with our Mk6 Golf GTD, which wouldn't start, and was marooned on our driveway. He had it recovered to his premises within hours, and his technician diagnosed and solved several electrical problems, plus he gave it a full service and MOT (and valet). It now drives like when it was new and so will be reprieved. Rob then delivered the car to our house because we couldn't collect it for several days more. We can't thank him enough. His prices are fair and much better than a main dealer I suspect (and very importantly he kept us in the loop).

What a breath of fresh air! Having a problem with Audi RS6 suspension and when I called Rob Lang he booked me in same day to investigate. They identified the problem and also gave the car a good general inspection while it was up on the lift. Super friendly, very knowledgeable and I will be happy to get future routine servicing done by Langs from now on.

Amazing service, from start to finish the team were professional and explained everything. The knowledge and speed were second to none. Our car was fixed, serviced and unexpectedly cleaned within the timeframe quoted. They are not local to me but happy to travel for an excellent experience.

Having just purchased an Iveco Daily van that had a few issues that needed to be rectified, I used an Iveco dealership who surprisingly did not completely fix the problems. I met Rob and his team of experienced engineers and was extremely impressed by their knowledge and expertise. They identified the cause of all the outstanding problems. This is a company who know what they are doing, and their customer service skills are top-notch.

You cannot possibly go wrong by fully relying on their advice and guidance, with work that is second to none. Rob is knowledgeable and kind, with this pervading through all the staff. I was in a really tight spot with poor workmanship from another company; this was sorted out quickly and efficiently and everything made perfect. I cannot rate this company highly enough.
