Wheel alignment & tracking

Steering off-centre, car pulling or tyres wearing on one edge? Our 4-wheel laser alignment sets your car back to the manufacturer's figures.

Laser wheel alignment

Precise tracking and 4-wheel alignment

Langs Automotive provides laser wheel alignment and tracking for drivers in Ringwood, Wimborne, Verwood and the surrounding area, from our workshop at Three Legged Cross. If your steering feels off-centre, your tyres are wearing unevenly or the car is pulling to one side, it's time for an alignment check.

We use laser alignment equipment to measure every wheel and set it to your vehicle manufacturer's specification. That covers front and rear tracking, camber, caster and toe angles, and full 4-wheel alignment, as well as checks after suspension, steering or tyre work.

Correct alignment improves handling and steering response, fuel economy, tyre life and overall safety. Misaligned wheels cause premature tyre wear and poorer economy, and can put extra strain on suspension and steering parts. A regular check costs far less than a set of tyres.

Alignment often goes hand in hand with other work. If a knock or a new part has brought on a warning light, our vehicle diagnostics will find the cause, and we can check the alignment at the same visit as your car servicing.

How it works

How we align your wheels

A proper alignment is more than a quick turn of the track rods. Here is what happens when your car comes in.

  1. 1

    Check the basics first

We look at tyre pressures, tread and wear patterns, and check the steering and suspension joints for play. Alignment can't be set properly on worn parts, so if we find any we'll tell you before going further.

  2. 2

    Fit the laser heads

The car goes on the alignment ramp and the measuring heads are clamped to each wheel. The laser equipment reads the angle of every wheel relative to the others and to the car's centre line.

  3. 3

    Compare with the manufacturer's figures

Each reading is checked against the specification for your exact make and model, so you can see which angles are in tolerance and which are out.

  4. 4

    Adjust and centre the steering

We adjust the toe, and camber and caster where your suspension has adjustment, then set the steering wheel straight. Pre- and post-alignment readings are available on request.

Signs you need it

Signs your wheel alignment is out

Alignment problems rarely announce themselves with a warning light. These are the signs to look out for.

01

The car pulls to one side

If the car drifts left or right on a straight, level road with the steering wheel held loosely, the alignment is the first thing to check. Tyre pressures and a sticking brake can do the same, so we check those too.

02

Steering wheel off-centre

Driving straight ahead with the steering wheel slightly turned is a classic sign the front tracking has moved, often after a pothole, a kerb or new steering parts.

03

Uneven tyre wear

Wear on the inner or outer edge of a tyre, or a feathered feel across the tread, usually means the toe or camber is out. Left alone, it can finish a tyre well before its time.

04

After a pothole or kerb strike

A hard knock can bend a steering arm or knock the settings out without any visible damage. If the car feels different afterwards, have it checked.

05

New suspension, steering parts or tyres

Replacing track rod ends, steering racks, wishbones, springs or shock absorbers can change the geometry. We recommend an alignment check after the work, and with new tyres to protect them from the start.

06

Vague or wandering steering

A car that needs constant small corrections to stay in lane, or squeals its tyres on gentle corners, may have alignment out of tolerance or worn steering parts. We check both.

Wheel alignment FAQs

What is the difference between tracking and wheel alignment?

Tracking usually means checking and setting the toe of the front wheels: whether they point straight ahead or slightly in or out. A full wheel alignment measures all four wheels, including camber and caster, and sets them to the manufacturer's figures. We offer both.

How do I know if my car needs wheel alignment?

The common signs are the car pulling to one side, an off-centre steering wheel and uneven wear on the inner or outer edges of the tyres. It is also worth a check after a pothole or kerb strike, new suspension or steering parts, or new tyres.

Should I have an alignment check after new tyres?

It's a good idea. Fitting new tyres to a car with the alignment out means they start wearing unevenly straight away. A check protects the money you've just spent.

Do you align vans and 4x4s?

Yes. We align cars of all makes, vans and light commercial vehicles, and 4x4s and SUVs. For regular van maintenance see our commercial vehicle servicing.

Can I see the readings?

Yes. Pre- and post-alignment readings are available on request, so you can see what was out and what it was set to.

What if my car isn't pulling but I'm not sure?

Book a no-obligation alignment check. We'll measure it, tell you honestly whether it needs adjusting, and only adjust it if it does.

Does wheel alignment improve fuel economy?

Wheels that are fighting each other add drag, so correct alignment helps fuel economy as well as tyre life, handling and safety. The bigger saving is usually in tyres that last as long as they should.

Where are you and which areas do you cover?

Our workshop is on Woolsbridge Industrial Estate, Three Legged Cross, Wimborne BH21 6SU. Drivers come to us for wheel alignment from Ringwood, Verwood, Wimborne, Ferndown, Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the New Forest.

As a nervous user of garages (due to past poor experiences), I was pleasantly surprised about the high level of service Rob Lang provided with our Mk6 Golf GTD, which wouldn't start, and was marooned on our driveway. He had it recovered to his premises within hours, and his technician diagnosed and solved several electrical problems, plus he gave it a full service and MOT (and valet). It now drives like when it was new and so will be reprieved. Rob then delivered the car to our house because we couldn't collect it for several days more. We can't thank him enough. His prices are fair and much better than a main dealer I suspect (and very importantly he kept us in the loop).

What a breath of fresh air! Having a problem with Audi RS6 suspension and when I called Rob Lang he booked me in same day to investigate. They identified the problem and also gave the car a good general inspection while it was up on the lift. Super friendly, very knowledgeable and I will be happy to get future routine servicing done by Langs from now on.

Having just purchased an Iveco Daily van that had a few issues that needed to be rectified, I used an Iveco dealership who surprisingly did not completely fix the problems. I met Rob and his team of experienced engineers and was extremely impressed by their knowledge and expertise. They identified the cause of all the outstanding problems. This is a company who know what they are doing, and their customer service skills are top-notch.
