Diagnostics

Main-dealer diagnostics, local garage prices

A modern Porsche relies on a network of control units for the engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes and driver aids. A generic code reader only sees part of the picture. Our dealer-grade equipment lets us look deeper, so we can:

  • Read and clear Porsche fault codes across the car's systems
  • Code and programme replacement parts
  • Reset service indicators after every service
  • Track down intermittent faults before parts are replaced

Warning light on, or a fault that keeps coming back? Book our vehicle diagnostics and we'll find the cause first.

What we see on the ramp

Common Porsche faults we check for

01

IMS bearing on M96 / M97 engines

The intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing on the earlier water-cooled flat-six engines, fitted to the 986 and 987 Boxster and Cayman and the 996 and early 997 911, is a known weak point. If it fails it can badly damage the engine, so many owners have it inspected or upgraded, often while the clutch is out. The later direct-injection engines from 2009 do not have an IMS.

02

Bore scoring

Some M96 / M97 flat-sixes, particularly the larger-capacity engines, can suffer scoring of the cylinder bores. Signs include rising oil use, a light tapping noise and smoke from one exhaust on start-up. We can check for the warning signs before it gets worse.

03

Oil leaks, including the rear main seal

The rear main seal and other gaskets on older flat-six engines can weep oil onto the clutch housing. A small leak is often harmless, but it needs watching and is best fixed when the gearbox or clutch is already off.

04

Radiators & coolant leaks

Front-mounted radiators on the Boxster, Cayman and 911 collect leaves and road dirt, which hold moisture and corrode them. Early Cayenne V8s are also known for plastic coolant pipes that crack under the intake. A falling coolant level or a sweet smell is the clue.

05

PDK & Tiptronic gearbox wear

Old, tired gearbox oil can lead to harsh, slow or hesitant shifts on Tiptronic automatics and PDK twin-clutch gearboxes. A gearbox oil service keeps the shifts smooth and protects an expensive unit.

06

Air suspension on Cayenne & Panamera

Cars on air suspension can develop leaking air springs or a tired compressor with age. A car that sits low after standing, or a suspension warning on the dash, is the usual sign. Our vehicle diagnostics pinpoint the faulty part.

911, GT & Turbo

Looked after like a sports car

A 911, GT3 or Turbo is built to be driven hard and deserves more than a basic oil change. We service to Porsche's schedule with the correct oil grade, keep the PDK or Tiptronic fresh with a gearbox oil service, check older flat-sixes for the early signs of the known IMS and bore issues, and keep the bodywork and underbody clean with dry ice blasting.

Porsche servicing FAQs

Will an independent service affect my Porsche warranty?

No. UK competition law lets you have your car serviced by an independent garage without affecting the manufacturer warranty, as long as the work follows the manufacturer's schedule and uses parts of matching quality. We service to Porsche's schedule using dealer-grade diagnostic equipment and record the work properly.

How much is a Porsche service?

A Porsche minor service starts from £259 and a major service from £400. The final price depends on the model, the engine, the oil grade and the spark plugs it needs. Call us with your registration for an exact price.

Do you service Porsche GT3s and other performance models?

Yes. We look after the whole range, from the Boxster and Macan to the 911 and the high-performance GT3, and give the same specialist care to Audi RS and R8 models.

Can you service a PDK or Tiptronic gearbox?

Yes. We carry out gearbox oil services on both PDK twin-clutch and Tiptronic automatic gearboxes. Call us with your registration and we'll confirm the right oil and price for your car.

Should I worry about the IMS bearing on my Porsche?

Only the earlier M96 and M97 flat-six engines have the IMS bearing that gets talked about, as fitted to the 986 and 987 Boxster and Cayman and the 996 and early 997 911. If you own one, ask us to check it at your next service and we'll talk you through the options.

Do you do walnut blasting on Porsche engines?

Yes. Direct-injection engines build up carbon on the back of the intake valves, which can cause rough running and misfires. Walnut blasting clears it without taking the engine apart.

Can I book an MOT with my Porsche service?

Yes, you can book an MOT alongside your service and we'll arrange it for you, so you only need to drop the car off once.

Where are you and which areas do you cover?

Our workshop is on Woolsbridge Industrial Estate, Three Legged Cross, Wimborne BH21 6SU. Porsche owners come to us from Wimborne, Verwood, Ringwood, Bournemouth, Salisbury and across the New Forest.

As a nervous user of garages (due to past poor experiences), I was pleasantly surprised about the high level of service Rob Lang provided with our Mk6 Golf GTD, which wouldn't start, and was marooned on our driveway. He had it recovered to his premises within hours, and his technician diagnosed and solved several electrical problems, plus he gave it a full service and MOT (and valet). It now drives like when it was new and so will be reprieved. Rob then delivered the car to our house because we couldn't collect it for several days more. We can't thank him enough. His prices are fair and much better than a main dealer I suspect (and very importantly he kept us in the loop).

What a breath of fresh air! Having a problem with Audi RS6 suspension and when I called Rob Lang he booked me in same day to investigate. They identified the problem and also gave the car a good general inspection while it was up on the lift. Super friendly, very knowledgeable and I will be happy to get future routine servicing done by Langs from now on.

Amazing service, from start to finish the team were professional and explained everything. The knowledge and speed were second to none. Our car was fixed, serviced and unexpectedly cleaned within the timeframe quoted. They are not local to me but happy to travel for an excellent experience.

Having just purchased an Iveco Daily van that had a few issues that needed to be rectified, I used an Iveco dealership who surprisingly did not completely fix the problems. I met Rob and his team of experienced engineers and was extremely impressed by their knowledge and expertise. They identified the cause of all the outstanding problems. This is a company who know what they are doing, and their customer service skills are top-notch.

You cannot possibly go wrong by fully relying on their advice and guidance, with work that is second to none. Rob is knowledgeable and kind, with this pervading through all the staff. I was in a really tight spot with poor workmanship from another company; this was sorted out quickly and efficiently and everything made perfect. I cannot rate this company highly enough.
